The Prahran Hotel

A Rich History in the Heart of Prahran.

The Prahran Hotel, located at 82 High Street, has a long and storied history that dates back to 1853. The site has been home to various iterations of a hotel, initially known as Morrow’s Family Hotel and later the Highbridge Hotel, making it one of the earliest establishments in Prahran.

The exact construction date of Morrow’s Hotel remains unclear, but it is believed to have been built to serve both local residents and travelers during the prosperous gold rush era. The hotel was described in Prahran’s first rate book in 1856 as a 10-roomed family hotel complete with a bar, stables, and an iron kitchen.

The hotel was originally owned by Morrow, who lived there until 1870. The building continued to carry his name until the late 1890s.

In the late 1890s, the original building was rebuilt into a 12-room brick structure with stables and outbuildings. By the 1900s, the hotel underwent further upgrades, transforming into a two-story building with modern amenities, including a cellar.

In 1940, the stables and outbuildings were demolished to make way for an extension, creating the modern character of the building as it stands today.

A major renovation in 2011 brought the Prahran Hotel into a new era while preserving its rich heritage. The design incorporated elements from the original Art Deco style, with circular motifs and iconic features like seventeen concrete pipes stacked along the facade, creating a striking visual statement.

Whether you’re meeting friends, celebrating a special occasion, or just enjoying a drink, the Prahran Hotel continues to be the perfect place to gather.
